Perhaps there is nothing more important than breathing. It might not be new for you to know that during intense and strenuous activities we often fail to breathe properly. It is because we fail to apply correct breathing techniques.

During intense athletic activities like rowing, breathing doesn’t come naturally as it seems. You have to practice proper breathing techniques. Do you know applying correct breathing techniques during a rowing stroke actually demands less physical strength and stamina?

Professional rowers make use of their breathing techniques to create force and energy. In case a rower has poor respiratory function, he will experience a poor performance. Thus, it becomes all the more important to train for correct breathing techniques.

Rhythm

You have to complement the rhythm of your breathing with that of every single stroke during rowing. The basic point is every rhythm of your breath has to be associated with the rhythm of your stroke while rowing.

Normally the professional rowers take one breath per stroke. As they begin to row harder they start adding seconds and make their breath shorter. It completely depends on you when you want to change your breath from one to two breaths per strokes.

This is highly personal and you have to make the experiment and find out what actually suits you best. You have to find out what is comfortable for you. Based on your comfort level and convenience you have to coordinate the timing of your breathing with the strokes.

As per the common norm during low intensity strokes you are taking one breath. You exhale on the drive and inhale on the recovery. Similarly during high intensity strokes you are employing two breaths. You exhale immediately you finish the drive. At the time of recovery you inhale and then exhale rapidly followed by an inhale once again precisely before the catch.

What matters the most is that you have to create a rhythmic breathing pattern, stick to it and execute the exact breathing pattern in every stroke while rowing. This is a very important factor that you have to keep in mind.

This is because executing the same breathing pattern provides even oxygen supply to your muscles so that they can function smoothly. This also helps you to increase the level of your physical stamina especially when you are not in your 100% fitness level.

Rowing is an enjoyable sport that involves intense workout. In order to excel in this sport you not only need to know the proper stroke techniques but you also need to have the training and practice of proper breathing techniques.

Influence on performance

The correct breathing techniques actually influence your rowing performance. The proper breathing makes sure that your body gets the oxygen supply at the right time. You have to learn the different skills of breathing that plays an important role in rowing.

It goes without saying that proper breathing techniques can aid you to win a race. If you are a novice, practice the breathing techniques with the help of various breathing exercises. Start practicing today so that you can apply the correct breathing techniques in the future.

Do you know rowing is one of the most physically taxing sports that affect some of the major muscles in your body? Rowing has acquired immense popularity as a form of fitness regime because of its capability to work out the entire body.

Rowing is an impressive calorie burning and muscle strengthening exercise. While rowing it might seem that your upper body is solely important for rowing actions. But the reality is both your upper and lower body muscles are simultaneously in use while rowing.

You will be definitely surprised to know the number of muscles used in rowing. Probably this is the reason why rowing is an effective workout for burning calories and shedding the extra weight from your body.

The core muscles of your body located in your stomach region, chest and back are the most important muscles that get in use while rowing. Rowing not only helps you to strengthen your back muscles but also tones and provides strength to your abdominal muscles.

Lower back pain

Do you know rowing is good for those who suffer from lower back pain? Since your abdominal muscles get strengthened, it supports your weight off the back. During rowing you force your muscles to pull and contract that tightens the core muscles. Thus, indirectly your abdominal region gets toned up.

Although it might seem that your upper body is the most important muscle group used during rowing, the leg muscles can’t be avoided. Do you know your leg muscles are the strongest in your entire body?

When you are in the seated position on the boat you are exerting power with your legs to move the oars and bring in the powerful strokes. The large muscles of your thighs known as quadriceps are the primary source of power and force in rowing.

Your hamstring muscles also get affected as these muscles are responsible for the flexibility of your knee during rowing. The hamstring muscles come in use during the recovery phase of the rowing strokes.

Upper arm muscles

Your upper arm muscles known as the biceps and triceps are also involved during rowing. The largest back muscle of your body known as the Latissimus dorsi is the main source of power and force from your upper body muscle group during rowing strokes.

Your shoulder muscles, known as the deltoids are known to stabilize your shoulder joint. Moreover, rhomboids, your upper back muscles also come in use during the end of each rowing stroke.

The oblique muscles located in your side abdominal region also get affected in the entire rowing activity. The muscles running down the length of your spin referred as the erector spinae helps to sustain a strong connection between your back and leg muscles.

It is clear that the rowing activity involves some of the major and important muscles groups of your body. Since rowing as a sport is not always possible to practice many indoor rowing machines are available in the market that gives you almost the same feeling of rowing on a boat.

Muscular imbalance is one of the leading reasons for injuries both major and minor among rowers. Rowing is a very physically exerting sport that requires immense physical strength and stamina. If you have acquired muscle imbalance while rowing or during training there are chances that you will suffer from knee, back and shoulder pains.

Rowing injuries are extremely painful and can affect any body part. Knee injury, torn ligaments, arrested nerves and muscle soreness are some of the most common problems that occur among rowers due to muscle imbalance.

Good news

The good news is that majority of the rowing injuries are not permanent and you can regain and continue with your activities with sufficient rest. With correct and proper fitness routine you can avoid and handle muscular imbalances.

During rowing your lower back is one such body part that is perhaps most exhausted because of your body’s position or posture during rowing. Your legs are pinned when you are performing the rowing action and your lower back has to exert all the force and power.

You can also suffer from upper back pain when you try to employ more force and power through your arms and shoulder. You can avoid such muscular imbalances if you take preventive measures.

You have to make sure that you are training under a rowing expert so that there is no flaw in your rowing techniques. It has been seen that wrong employment of technique can seriously harm your body because your body gets imbalanced.

Make sure you indulge in strength training exercises so that you have enough strength and stamina to engage for long hours in rowing activities. Strengthen your lower back muscles and abdominal muscles because these are the areas that generate the maximum force during rowing.

Improve your endurance!

You have to improve your cardiovascular endurance so that you don’t run out of oxygen in the middle of rowing. When you run short of oxygen it begins to affect your muscle groups involved in the rowing activity and chances are predominant that you suffer from muscular imbalances.

You have to regularly train and include rowing exercises in your daily routine that provides your strength, stability and flexibility to your body. Regular rowing exercises help your muscles to condition for the intense rowing activities and also avoid getting off balance and injuring yourself.

Because rowing is an intense sport and requires high level of physical fitness you have to keep in mind that they you don’t injure yourself with overtraining. Don’t go beyond your physical limits because then there are chances that you end with serious injuries.

In order to avoid muscular imbalance you have to also see if your equipments are working properly. Always consult a doctor in case you have acquired any muscular imbalance so that you have quick recovery.

Take advice of your instructor who will help you out to point out your weak muscles. Develop weight training routines to get rid of any muscular imbalance in the near futures. Therefore, you have to stay fit to refrain from muscular imbalance.

Have you ever wondered that correct rowing workouts can actually help you to win a race? Whether you are planning to take part in the next competition or aiming to lose weight indulging in indoor rowing workouts is a good option.

Rowing workouts demand high degree of physical stamina and mental strength. The workouts are designed in such manner to associate you with the severe pain and tolerance level that is required in the sport of rowing.

Because of the availability of different kinds of rowing machines in the gyms and local health clubs, it has become convenient to train indoors with the help of rowing machines. If you are really serious about rowing as a sport you have to follow a structured pattern of training and practice indoor rowing workouts.

Low impact

The indoor rowing machines provide low impact complete body workout. You can control the intensity of the rowing machines which makes it even more convenient. Incorporate the fitness program at the comfort of your home because the indoor rowing machines are reasonably priced and also don’t take much space.

What is the benefit of indoor rowing workouts? Well it helps you to strengthen your entire body muscles and also improves your cardiovascular condition. The rowing machines deliver you the fitness level that is desired by every rower who wants to excel in the sport.

Are you a beginner?

If you are a beginner the workout should not be very intense and rigorous. Gradually you can increase the intensity of your workout session. Make sure that before you begin with the rowing workouts you do warm up for 5-10 minutes to ensure that your muscles are conditioned for the following training session.

With the help of air resistant rowing machines you can have cardio vascular strength training. The best part about the air resistant machine is that you can adjust the resistance to variable levels. The higher the resistance the better is your workout. Since it is a low impact exercise even if you have knee injury you can work out using rowing machines.

Make sure…

While you are sitting on the rowing machine make sure that you place your knees together and bent leaning forward from your hips and your hands should be straight holding the handles. This workout enables you to relate with the oar that goes under water in real boat rowing activity.

When you are working out you have to make sure that your legs are compelling for the strokes. All through this exercise you have to keep your back straight. When you pull the handle of the machine to your chest you have to slightly lean back. Keep your elbows by your side in order to involve more powerful and efficient stroke.

It is always better to train in gyms and fitness clubs because it enables you to test your improvement in a competitive way. But you have to follow the rowing workouts with caution. Don’t get into the workout sessions if you have any injury because it will harm you more than doing any good.

Rowing is a physically demanding sport that requires for an extreme level of upper body strength and stamina. Rowing is one such activity that involves all the core muscles of your body. Do you know rowers are considered to be the most physically fit athletes?

The sport demands extreme level of endurance, balance, upper body strength and the will power to continue with your rowing activity even when your body gives up. Professional rowers indulge in several upper body strengthening exercises to strengthen their core muscles and focus on more powerful rowing actions.

Your upper body consists of several muscles like triceps, biceps, deltoids, pectorals, latissimus dorsi and so on. If you are a professional rower toning and strengthening of your upper body muscles is essential to keep you strong and improve your performance.

Analyzing

Let us analyze some of the upper body strengthening exercises practiced by professional rowers.

Chest or bench press is an impressive upper body exercise that strengthens your chest muscles, triceps, biceps and the deltoid muscles. This is an extensive workout that can be practiced with the help of dumbbells, or using a chest press machine.

Push-ups are also very effective for strengthening your upper body muscles. It follows the principle of chest press. Instead of facing up you face down on the floor and use your own body weight for resistance unlike using dumbbell weights.

Since you are in the rowing profession you need to have strong arms. By indulging in bicep curls and tricep extensions you can build your arm muscles strong enough to increase the intensity and power of rowing. You can perform these exercises with the help of dumbbells or barbells.

The pull-up is perhaps the best upper body strengthening exercise that targets your arms and back muscles. This exercise is excellent and works best for your latissimus dorsi muscle. Apart from giving your back muscles the strength it also works wonders for your shoulders and the abdominal muscles.

Bent over rows is the appropriate upper body exercise that is excellent for your biceps, forearms, shoulder and upper back. This exercise that is used by professional rowers is also practiced by bodybuilders because it enhances strength and also increases the size of muscles.

Weight training exercises are practiced by professional rowers because it aids in strengthening the upper body muscles. Maintain the strength and physical stamina during a rowing race is very crucial. Weight training seems to be the best option in such kind of sport where your upper body strength is much into use.

Practice at home

You can practice the weight training exercises at home itself and prepare yourself for the next rowing completion. You can even try for the various rowing machines available in the market that also helps you train your upper body strength.

The above mentioned are some of the common upper body strengthening exercises applied by professional rowers. Why don’t you try out these exercises and start getting positive results within few days. Make sure that you engage in warm up sessions before you begin with the weight training exercises.

Rowing is perhaps one of the oldest sports known to mankind. The practice that began as a mode of transportation and warfare became a popular sport all over the world. This sport is also an important component of the distinct cultural identity of English speaking world.

Before…

The references of rowing as a sporting element can be traced back to the ancient Egyptian warrior Amenopolis who was known for his impressive oarsmanship. It was on River Thames in London where the first modern rowing competition was held with professional rowers in the 17th century.

It was in the 19th century when the boat race became popular and was practiced extensively in both England and America. Throughout the history of rowing there have been traces that it has been a male dominating sport and women were not allowed to participate.

20th century

It was only in the 20th century when rowing was first introduced in the Olympic Games. Due to the bad weather its conduct in the first Olympic Game in 1896 was cancelled and thereby got its first entry in 1900 Paris Olympic. From the year 1962 the annual World Rowing Championships began where rowers from all over the world started participating.

However it was in 1976 Summer Olympics of Montreal when there were female participants. It was the first time when women were given the chance to participate in this amazing sport and show to the world that even they can compete and excel in a physically demanding sport like rowing.

It was 1954 when the category of women’s rowing sport was included in the European Rowing Championships. The first women rowing exhibition event between Cambridge and Oxford was held in 1927. Initially for couple years this was conducted as an exhibition that later turned into a racing sport.

With the advent of the 20th century, rowing as a sport had expanded significantly almost everywhere in the western civilization. Different clubs were formed and frequently inter-club rowing competitions were held.

In the 20th century the teams that dominated the sport of rowing were United States of America, East Germany and Soviet Union. Several head to head races started taking place on Thames River in London from 1927. The Oxford and Cambridge race was one of the most popular and thrilling activities recorded in the history of 20th century rowing.

The same face off races started taking place in America. The first face off rowing competition was held between Harvard and Yale in the year 1952. The head racing that began in USA in the 1952 on Charles River, in Massachusetts is today the largest rowing event in the whole world.

The 20th century witnessed a change in the number of crews or rowers in one boat. In contrast to the 19th century where 8, 10 or 12 members were most prevalent, the 20th century included 2, 4 or 8 rowing members.

Rowing as a sport has undergone significant transformation in terms of training and advancement of equipments. But its essence still remains the same. Similar to the olden days even today people love the sport of rowing and enjoy it.

In today’s Olympics, there are as many as 14 different Olympic Rowing events for men and women to compete in. Each event in Olympic rowing is indicated by a number and a symbol in parenthesis in order to give out information about its nature and in order to ensure that there is no confusion regarding the rules of rowing that goes along with each kind. For example: 2+ or 1x. In representations like this, the following information remains coded:

Number of people in the scull/boat: there are different competitions for double scull and single scull entries in the Olympics. The number in the example given above indicates how many people are in the boat.

Sculling or sweeping: in the case of “sweep” events, each rower has only one oar, while in “scull” events, the rowers get to have one oar in each hand. The Olympics explicitly differentiates between the two. While “x” is a scull race, “-“indicates that the race is a sweep race.

Coxswain or Coxless: a boat with “coxswain” implies that there is a coxswain or cox in the boat along with the team, steering and directing them along the lane. A “coxless” boat would not have that additional member. The inclusion of a coxswain id indicated by the “+” symbol.

Differentations

There are some more differentiations being stipulated in the Olympic rules of rowing

Men or women: the Olympics have separate events in each category for men and women

Age: Youth – men and women, up to 18 years of age
Men’s and Women’s B, up to 19 to 22 years of age
Men’s and Women’s A, over 23 years of age
Veterans, over 27 years of age who are not competing in the men’s or women’s A category.

The length of Olympic rowing races is stipulated at 2000 meters always. In total, the rowers have 6 lanes in total and each lane is differentiated from the other with buoys floating 500 meters away from one another. Contrary to what most people assume, the players are allowed to switch lanes provided they do not deter the path of any other player. All measures are taken to prevent false starts at the beginning of the races. However each crew is allowed one false start but in case there are two successive false starts, the team is liable for disqualification.

Judges

In addition there are also several judges stationed in the competition in order to ensure that all the rules of rowing are being followed stringently. For example, there are judges to keep the check on alignment of boats; there is the Starter to signal the beginning of races as well as to give our warnings in case of false starts. Again, there is the Umpire who goes alongside the athletes in order to check that all of them are proceeding properly in the races. Again, there are judges to verify whether all the rules of rowing are being honored in regard to factors such as weight of boats, weights of athletes etc.
